The Importance of Emergency Lighting in Fire Safety
Emergency lighting is a critical component of fire safety systems, ensuring that occupants can evacuate safely in the event of a power failure or fire. At P-F-P (Plumbridge Fire Protection), we provide expertly designed and installed emergency lighting solutions across Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire, Greater London, Surrey, and surrounding counties.
Why Emergency Lighting Matters
In the event of a fire, normal lighting may fail, plunging a building into darkness. This can lead to panic, disorientation, and increased risk of injury. Emergency lighting ensures that escape routes, exits, and essential safety equipment remain visible, providing clear guidance for safe evacuation.
Legal Requirements
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, it is a legal requirement for all non-domestic buildings to have emergency lighting installed. The lighting must activate automatically if the mains power fails and remain operational for at least one hour. In buildings with sleeping accommodations, such as HMOs (Houses in Multiple Occupation), this duration increases to three hours.
Types of Emergency Lighting
Maintained Emergency Lighting: These fittings can be operated with a switch and can stay on continuously or activate only during a power failure. They are ideal for places where large groups gather, such as cinemas or theatres, ensuring there’s always some level of illumination.
Non-Maintained Emergency Lighting:
These lights only activate in the event of a power failure. They are usually powered by battery packs that automatically recharge when mains power is restored.
Illuminated Exit Signs: These signs light up to clearly indicate the location of fire exits, helping to guide occupants to safety during an emergency.
Photoluminescent Markings:
These include tape, paint, and floor discs that glow in the dark, marking escape routes and changes in floor levels, especially useful in smoke-filled environments or for partially sighted individuals.
Where is Emergency Lighting Needed?
Emergency lighting is essential in several key areas within a building, including:
All exit doors
Escape routes and corridor intersections
Stairways and changes in floor levels
Outside each final exit and on external escape routes
Fire-fighting equipment and alarm call points
Windowless rooms and large toilet areas
Lift areas and any part of the building exceeding 60m²
Adequate lighting should ensure that all these areas remain visible and accessible during an emergency.
